Daybreakers

2010
Directors: Michael Spierig, Peter Spierig
Starring: Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe, Sam Neill

Half of the Matrix and half of 28 days later? Maybe if you took the worst half of each of those and do a poor job merging them, then you get Daybreakers. The plot basically is the entire worlds population is now of the vampire kind and humans are dying off as a species. The problem with this is that vampires only source of food is the blood of humans and their food stores will be completely depleted by the end of the month.
That's where the protagonist Edward Dalton (Ethan Hawke) steps in. I don't remember his exact job title but he is some kind of scientist who is working on constructing a substitute for the blood. From the beginning Ed gives off a vibe like he is a human sympathizer and you see signs of this when he saves a group of them from his vampire brotheren. The movie continues from this point exactly how you think it would. Edward breaks vampire laws, rescues humans, tries to find a way to save vampires/himself and his new human friends, ect. Just like avatar is pretty much Dances with Wolves just with humans and aliens instead of Indians, so is this but with vampires.
The only redeeming quality from this movie is the slow-motion, over the top gory fight scenes at the end. I dug this but can easily see it being ridiculous to the people who aren't into horror movies and paid 10 dollars plus to be entertained with character development and story building. You might have noticed that I haven't mentioned the leading lady in the film. That's because I didn't even remember her name while leaving the theater. Poor job by her.
All in all this was a movie with all of the pieces to become a solid hit and take the taste of Twilight out of vampire fans mouths. William Dafoe did the best he could i suppose. He is one of the best actors out there but with a poor script and just no overall direction of the film, what can you do? Sam Neil (Dr. Grant from Jurassic Park) will always make a great bad guy but once again I never got the vibe that he could ever win. Ethan Hawke put on a lackadaisical performance. I felt no attachment to him nor any of the main characters. He is one well dressed dude though, I will give him that. Visually the movie started out beautifully, showing what the world would look like in the future if this kind of event were ever to occur. They went away from this though with the majority of the movie being in open fields somewhere or an old rundown restaurant.

Rating: Just so you know I'm going to go with a 5 stars rating instead of the traditional and accepted 4 star. 5 just looks so much nicer. Daybreakers earns a 3 out of 5 stars. The review wasn't very nice but they did somethings well. The movie would've scored higher if it had a, I don't know, ENDING. I can't even drop a spoiler in this because there is nothing to spoil, they just drive off.

Favorite Scene:Near the beginning Ed is just getting home when he is surprised by a visit from his brother. They have their brother argument when an alarm or something goes off. In walks this ugly looking, winged beast and he starts slapping the bros around. Later we learn that if a vampire doesn't get blood and starves, they mutate into these hideous creatures. It was just a good shock to see the ugly vampy for the first time and the fight wasn't bad.

Quotes: Nothing really to remember from this movie which is sad. I had high hopes for it. Did i forget to mention that Willem Dafoe's character is named Elvis? Clever. His most notable line is "Living in a world where vampires are the dominate species is about as safe as bare backing a 5 dollar whore." Sam Neil says "Immortality is the miracle, we are blessed." So so at best.

don't worry that's wine not blood.
